WHO ARE WE?

Sandoval Band is an all original, 8-piece Funk/Rock/Soul Band from Meriden, CT. Our mission is to blend sounds, cultures and generations to bring people together through up-tempo, soulful and funky rhythms in the style of Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder and many more, that are used to deliver a positive message of hope, love and the power of unity.

"I've never been satisfied with one specific musical genre. My ear attracts multiple genres" says Jean Sandoval, Guitarist/Producer and founder. Sandoval's writing and arranging are relevant and aimed to motivate and encourage the listener. "I'm much more interested in connecting with people through music than showing off some kind of talent. Music is a very powerful platform that every musician has been responsible and we  must use it wisely."

MEET THE BAND

Q: WHAT ARTISTS HAVE INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY?

A: There are so many. The most influential i would have to say Eric Clapton, simply because the way he morphed himself into so many genres while always staying true to the blues. Prince is another one, but this would turn into a novel LOL. Currently, Doyle Bramhall II, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Hillsong United, Raphael Saadiq.

Q: WHEN WE PLAY MUSIC, WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS?

A: Music is extremely spiritual. Music can bring joy, healing, it can truly change the atmosphere..but of course, it can also the opposite with the wrong motives. Since Music was created to please God and bring glory to Him, it only makes sense that it connects deeply with people and it can bring you the kind of peace and joy that we're all in need of!

Q: DESCRIBE YOURSELF USING A CHARACTER FROM A TV SHOW

A: I've always related to Ted Mosby from "How I Met Your Mother". He always went all in (pretty intensely) in whatever he was doing, Sometime it was a little too much but he was always loyal and honest.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO ON YOUR DOWNTIME?

A: There is nothing like hanging out with my 4 year old Abella Layla-Leigh, my 1 year old Zion Clapton (yes, that's also his real middle name LOL) and my wife Amy. Whether we're driving to find good Tag Sales, having ice cream, hanging at Chuck e Cheese or just hanging at the house..that's my happy place.

Q: FOOD YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT!

A: Mexican all the way and of course, the BEST pizza in the entire universe, Modern Apizza in New Haven, CT 🙂

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO ON YOUR DOWNTIME?

A: What is downtime? and where can I find some LOL? Honestly, right now, in my downtime I’m doing more music. I’m in this mood where I really can’t get enough. I’m designing theory, improv and ear training courses and resources, or composing and collecting ideas for my own music or exploring in the studio.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO UPCOMING MUSICIANS?

A: Surround yourself with people that inspire you. If you are constantly making the effort to go down to the jam session and play with people you respect and want to learn from, the work comes much easier. I’ve learned so much more from the people around me than from recordings.

Q: FOOD YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT!

A: Salad. Lot’s and lot’s of salad. My parents used to treat salad like dessert when I was little. I even wrote a short story when I was in 4th grade called “The King Who Loved Salad” for an assignment.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW?

A: I’d have to say The Office. I love trying to figure out if the actors are improvising or not.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

A: Lately it’s been Corey Henry and Kung Fu. I’ve been feeling funky lately.

Q: WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

A: Currently, I am switching back and forth between Marc Broussard, Hillsong united, Chris Stapleton, Demi Lovato, and Teskey Brothers. I think it’s good to change it up throughout the day!

Q: WHAT ARTISTS HAVE INSPIRED YOU TO SING THE WAY YOU DO?

A: I would have to say growing up, Whitney Houston was my inspiration hands down. As I got older, Christiana Aguilera, mixed with a little Brooks & Dunn and Marc Broussard. Currently, Chris Stapleton! It’s been a wild journey from pop to country to gospel to blues, I think I’m still being inspired and shifting as I grow older, which is the best place to be!

Q: FOOD YOU CAN"T LIVE WITHOUT!

A: Ummmm Mexican! Did I mention Mexican! This is tough.... buttttt I would have to say...... for all meals.. Mexican! Haha JK! (By the way, If you’re ever in Meriden you must check out Tacos Mi Nacho- the very best)

Q: WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE LIKE A 2 YEAR OLD WATCHING ELMO?

A: Driving on a back country road on a beautiful day (75 degrees with the sun bright and a gentle but constant breeze) listening to country music and eventually sitting down with my friends aka my tribe and doing just about anything. I love making memories, it’s literally making me smile so hard right now thinking about the photo albums full of memories I hold in my heart! Making memories with people will always be my favorite thing to do in this life.

Q; WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO UPCOMING AND YOUNG MUSICIANS?

A: Take your time and be kind to yourself! Discovering yourself as an artist is half the battle. We are in a world full of different types of genres and it’s easy to feel like you’re not sure which direction you want to go. The great thing about Music is that it’s always evolving, and as an artist, we have the ability to always evolve as well! In the end, you can change directions many times in this musical journey, so just find a way to enjoy each season you’re in and be content with where you are!
Also, don’t forget that you choose your audience by your character. So don’t give up too much to be what others want you to be. The audience you attract will be the one you want if you choose to stay true to yourself!

Q: WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

A: Bill Evans (the saxophone player), Kamasi Washington, and because sometimes you just need to sing in the car: Awesome Mix, Vol 1 from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Q: FOOD YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT (AND PROBABLY CAN EAT EVERY DAY)

A: Definitely bananas...

Q: WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO UPCOMING AND YOUNG MUSICIANS?

A: Have fun! It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the study of music that we forget to listen and enjoy the moment! And don’t be afraid to explore different ideas/techniques. One of my college professors used to say “If you sound good in the practice room, you’re practicing the wrong thing.”

Q: WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE LIKE A 2 YEAR OLD WATCHING ELMO?

A: Live music!!! Especially if it’s funky!

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO ON YOUR DOWNTIME?

A: I like to work outside in the garden or read(mostly murder mysteries!). But truly my favorite thing is just spending time with family and friends.
